CARDINAL DESMOND CONNELL DIES AGED 90

The death’s been announced of Cardinal Desmond Connell.

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said this morning that he had been ill for some time, and passed away in his sleep overnight.

Desmond Connell served as Archbishop of Dublin from 1988 until 2004 before becoming Cardinal in 2001.

He was criticised for his handling of clerical sex abuse cases, and at one point issued a statement asking for forgiveness.

His funeral arrangements will be announced later.
