DATE: 01/04/03 South East Radio in Wexford causes concern over closing of bridge
A South East Radio News item today (Tuesday April 1st) resulted in hundreds of calls to the station and local council offices from concerned motorists outraged at plans to close Wexford Bridge due to subsidence problems.
In an April Fools Day prank, the station reported that the bridge over the Slaney in Wexford town had subsided by several inches and would close for propping up as soon as a temporary bridge was constructed. The full script of the story was;
The closure of Wexford's recently reconstructed bridge is imminent again. A confidential report seen by South East Radio News shows that there has been subsidence in the supporting columns under the bridge. The specially commissioned report followed a recent routine inspection of the bridge which showed that it had sunk by more than seven inches in the past five months. While there is not any immediate threat to the stability of the bridge, the Dublin based consultant's report highlights that excessive use of it by heavy vehicles coupled with unstable ground has led to the seriousness of the situation.
The report recommends bridge closure as soon as possible to allow remedial works to be carried out. Meanwhile, construction has begun on a temporary bridge between Ferrybank and Custom House Quay. It is expected this will be a toll bridge to help defray the cost of repairs necessary to the existing one. South East Radio News has also learned the toll bridge is expected to be in operation for a period of five months. While a toll has not yet been agreed for the temporary bridge it is felt motorists would prefer this option as opposed to making a detour through Crossabeg and Ferrycarrig.
The prank extended to the station's magazine programme, Regional Express, with the co-operation of Wexford Borough independent Councillor Padge Reck, who came on air to rally against the foolishness of the Council for not ensuring the bridge had been built on solid ground in the first place. Hundreds of listeners also rang in, and while a minority twigged it was a hoax, many were also critical of the Council for its perceived wasting of public funds on an unsteady bridge. The local press were also on to the South East Radio newsroom only to be politely told to check the date on a calendar. When the ruse was revealed in the 12.00pm bulletin, there were more calls, but this time saying "well done" and "thanks for the laugh".
Commenting after the noon deadline, Head of News Paul Rowley said, "We've thoroughly enjoyed hoodwinking our listeners this morning, the hoax story went off like clockwork and it was a team effort. I'd like to congratulate our news team for reading the story with straight faces, it can't have been easy!"
South East Radio News caused consternation five years ago with a story claiming that the famous Pikeman statue in memory of the 1798 rebels in Wexford town's Bull Ring was being sold to an American and would be exported and re-erected in a US city. Councillor Padge Reck was also in on that joke.
11.3.03 South East Radio win prestigious national Guinness Radio Award
South East Radio was one of only a small number of radio stations to be awarded a top prize at "The Guinness Radio advertising Awards" last weekend. The Wexford station beat off competition from big city and national stations to win an award for the best 'station produced' commercial in the competitive 'food & drink' category of the competition. The commercial, for 'Mangan's Traditional Chipper', was produced in South East Radio Production studio by the station's Production Manager, Dave Redmond. South East Radio was the only non-city based radio station to win an award at the ceremony.
The prize was presented to Dave Redmond during a glitzy ceremony at The Burlington Hotel in Dublin on Friday night which was attended by members of the station's Management and Staff.
Managing Director, Eamonn Buttle, was delighted at the win, "South East Radio produces an average of 100 innovative and creative commercials to the highest standard every week - we have the talent and facilities to match the largest national stations and it's great that we've been recognised as leaders in the field. I am particularly pleased for Dave who has put in a lot of hard work since he took over the position in August last year".
The success for the station follows recent good news in the JNLR survey which saw the station's audience increase by 5000 a day. The station now has 45,000 listeners each day in County Wexford - far ahead of Radio 1, 2FM, Today and Lyric FM.
4.3.03 South East Radio's Beetle Bug hits the streets.
"Recently South East Radio started using its latest promotional vehicle, the "South East Radio Beetle Bug", and already it has attracted a lot of attention throughout the region. The Wexford station are using the fully-branded VW on the streets of Wexford, Enniscorthy, Gorey and New Ross where it is involved in promotions teamed with on-air activity. The station's Promotions Team welcome campaigns that partner strikingly visual on-street promotions with highly effective on-air air advertising. Pictured is Laura running a 'sampling distribution' for a breakfast cereal linked to "South East Radio's Full Irish Breakfast" programme.
30th July 2002 Dave Redmond joins South East Radio to present the station's new-look Breakfast Programme from Tuesday 6th August.
On signing a contract with the Wexford station Dave said he was relishing the challenge of presenting the station's prestigious weekday 7-10am slot. "I will be presenting a mix of music, news and information that's in-tune with the region's demands", he said. Putting a smile on peoples' faces is high on the list of Dave's priorities. "South East Radio have a great team and we're working on some great new ideas that include testing listeners early morning mental agility and launching some fantastic new competitions", he continued.
Dave will also be working as the station's Head of Production which will involve over-seeing the operation of the station's busy digital production facilities that produce commercials and station promos.Dave Redmond, a native of Gorey in County Wexford, worked for South East Radio before where he presented various shows including the station's "Drive-time" programme. For the past few years he has been working at Dublin's Lite FM, FM 104 and, most recently, East Coast FM in Bray.Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, Clive Roylance, South East Radio's Head of Programmes, said he was delighted to be welcoming Dave back to the Wexford station. "Dave brings a lot of professional radio experience with him and we know he'll use it to great effect in producing a highly entertaining mix for our Full Irish Breakfast. The team here know Dave well and we're all delighted he's coming home to Wexford!". South East Radio's new-look "Full Irish Breakfast" with Dave Redmond is on from 7-10am Monday - Friday commencing Tuesday 6th August.
July 2002 South East Radio is testing a new internet streaming service that is expected to go live during August 2002.
The tests, utilising the "Windows Media Player" format, will make the station's entire output available worldwide 24 hours per day. Previously the station's internet streaming was available for limited hours and accessible by limited number of simultaneous listeners. The Windows Media Player format is now reckoned to be the best platform for 'webcasting' (as the software is shipped as standard with all Microsoft Windows equipped PC's). Station engineers are said to be delighted with the quality and reliability of the tests so far. South East Radio is constantly striving to be at the forefront of technological advances (it was the first Irish local station to utilise digital studio systems, and was the first independent station in Ireland to broadcast RDS transmissions).
Fri 22nd July 2002 - A FIRST FOR THE IRISH RADIO INDUSTRY
South East Radio has become the first radio station in Ireland to be awarded the FAS National Standard for Human Resource Development, "Excellence Through People". The award comes after intensive training for the station's management and staff, and a gruelling FAS check the company came up to the necessary standard of the national scheme. 32 organisations, ranging from banks and supermarkets to a university, received the award from Tánaiste Mary Harney T.D. at a recent presentation ceremony at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel. Nationally, a total of 196 companies employing in excess of 55,000 people have now been awarded the standard.
The Tánaiste said, "The Excellence Through People standard is a recognition of quality training and the related human resource activities. She added that, "Employers who train their people are more effective in maintaining the motivation and commitment of their employees. In that context, Excellence Through People provides a sensible framework which organisations can use to develop their staff and business".
As part of the qualifying process for ETP South East Radio successfully completed the first ever BCI Industry Management Training Programme. General Manager Liam Dwyer said, "We’ve concentrated heavily on staff training and development, we’d completed a BCI Management Training Programme and ETP dovetailed excellently into this programme. We needed to drive forward our training & HR practices in a bench-markable way. Excellence Through People covers all staff in the organisation and is extremely detailed. It ensures we are clearly focused on all the essential areas of training, development, communication and HR practices".
Mr Dwyer added, "We here at South East Radio are extremely proud of reaching the required standard and also of being the first radio station in the country to gain this distinction. I'd like to pay tribute to my fellow management and all the staff for embracing wholeheartedly what we were trying to achieve in gaining the ETP accolade. Without their co-operation and enthusiasm this award would have been extremely difficult to achieve."
