US SECRETARY OF STATE BUILDS SUPPORT TO FIGHT IS MILITANTS

The US Secretary of State John Kerry is in Egypt today – as he continues his efforts to build a coalition of countries to fight Islamic State militants.

So far he’s enlisted the support of 10 Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, but Turkey has refused to get involved – adding that it won’t allow its air bases to be used for air strikes.

Iran has offered to help – but Mr Kerry said it wouldn’t be appropriate, given the fact that the US has clashed with Iran on its nuclear programme.

The CIA says Islamic State militants now has as many as 30,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
