Almost 1,800 Leaving Cert Students Get Their Results Today

ALMOST 1,800 LEAVING CERT STUDENTS GET THEIR RESULTS TODAY

58,000 Leaving Cert Students are getting their results today – 1,755 of them in County Wexford.

Across the country one student has achieved nine A1s, eight got 8 A1s – while 215 others will receive the maximum 600 points with their 6 A1s.

There has been an increase for the third year running in the numbers failing honours maths, but there has been a rise in grades for ordinary level maths.

Irish Times education correspondent Joe Humphreys says the results in higher level maths show that a policy change may be necessary.

“There’s been a major push in recent years to get more students to take higher level maths” he said.

“The numbers now have leveled off – it’s gone up from 16 percent of candidates (who took) the higher level paper four years ago, it hit 27 percent last year and it stayed at 27 percent this year”.

“Within that, the failure rate has started to creep up – which would be a worrying sign and maybe an indication that the policy people need to concentrate on standards as much as getting the quantity of student through the courses” he added.
