BELGIUM AUTHORITIES CONFIRM TWO STUDENTS WHO DIED IN FIRE ARE IRISH

Two bodies found at scene of fire at a residence used by Irish students in the Belgian city of Leuven are those of Irish students in their 20s.

Eight Irish students had been rescued from the burning building .

The blaze broke out at about 6:10am this morning and Belgian police say they are now working out the cause of the fire.

The Irish Ambassador has arrived in Leuven to liaise with the students and the authorities.

Jens Franssen is a journalist with Belgium’s VRT. He says the 8 students rescued have been receiving medical attention.

“They were taken to the local police department…they have been taken to hospital; not because they’re injured, not because they have wounds – but it’s a standard procedure to have a full physical and mental check after a disaster like this” he said.

“So right now they’re at hospital for a check” he added.
