Concerns Over Conditions In Calais Migrant Camps

CONCERNS OVER CONDITIONS IN CALAIS MIGRANT CAMPS

Concerns are being expressed about the conditions in camps where migrants are living in Calais in northern France.

Every day, scores of people from Africa and the Asia attempt to stow away on trucks travelling to the UK and Ireland.

The Irish Road Haulage Association says Irish truck drivers passing through Calais are risking their lives because of the scale of the migrant crisis in the city.

Our reporter spoke to one migrant – Mahmoud, an engineering student from Sudan – at one of the camps which they call the Jungle:

“The jungle first off there’s no houses, we build it ourselves and we have plastic covers to protect us from rain” he said.

“It’s difficult, but we hope that our future will be bright and we can change our lives” he added.
