DROP IN NUMBERS GETTING SUSI GRANTS IN CO. WEXFORD

County Wexford has seen a drop of just over 6.5 per cent in the number of pupils qualifying for third level education grants.

The figures have come from data from the centralised processing agency SUSI.

Figures published today show that students from mainly rural counties are receiving less grants following the report after the second year of operation of SUSI.

Fourteen counties have experienced a drop in the numbers qualifying for the grant ranging from 2.3 per cent in Kilkenny to 18.4 per cent in Mayo.

The drop in county Wexford is 6.6 per cent between 2012 and 2013 with the numbers down by 182 in total.

However County Waterford saw the biggest jump in the country in those students being grant aided, up by 18.2 per cent.

Before SUSI came into operation local authorites and VEC’s had sole responsibility for processing grant applications for third level students.
