FF CALLS ON IRISH WATER TO DESTROY INFORMATION IT’S RECEIVED ON COUNCIL TENANTS

Fianna Fail wants Irish Water to destroy the information its received so far on council tenants from local authorities.

It comes amid reports that the names of more than 100,000 people have been passed on to the utility as it tries to complete its billing database.

Fianna Fail says the handing over of the information without the individual’s consent is unacceptable.

The party spokesman on public expenditure, Deputy Sean Fleming, is preparing legislation on the issue, which would require Irish Water to row back.

“The original form from Irish Water asked for people’s PPS numbers, that was subsequently reversed and then Irish Water said they would delete all the PPS numbers that they had got at that stage” he said.

We are saying the same should happen here: this is bad legislation that requires a county council to hand over information on their private tenants to a third party”.

“And we’re saying the best way of dealing with that legislation is to amend the legislation” he added.
