Labour Vows To Hold Referendum On Abortion If Re-elected

LABOUR VOWS TO HOLD REFERENDUM ON ABORTION IF RE-ELECTED

The Labour Party is vowing to hold a referendum on abortion if it is re-elected to government.

It comes after Friday’s huge vote in favour of same-sex marriage.

Labour says it wants to see a vote on whether or not to repeal the 8th Amendment, which gives equal right in the constitution to the mother and her unborn child.

The Minister for Equality Aodhan O’Riordain says its a very difficult and divisive issue.

“There’s still 4,000 women a year going to Britain to access terminations in Britain – it’s a very difficult, very emotional and divisive area” he said.

“Quite frankly, if we were to have this referendum – which I passionately believe we should have – it’s a long conversation to be had”.

“I think that the preparatory work for that is only just beginning”.

“But I will say this much: you vote Labour in the next general election, you’re going to get a referendum on the 8th Amendment” he added.
