NEW REPORT FINDS PEOPLE ARE LARGELY POSITIVE ABOUT THE IRISH LANGUAGE

A report released today shows that 37 per cent of people believe that the government is not doing enough to promote the Irish language.

That figure is up from 15 per cent in 2001 according to ESRI and Amárach Research figures.

They also say that as a society we’re largely positive about the Irish language with about 41 per cent of people in the Republic of Ireland able to speak Irish.

Conradh na Gaeilge’s Julian de Spáinn says that the government needs to do more to promote the spoken language.
