Colleagues at the heart of the business

Currently total staff numbers exceed one hundred with most staff living in the local hinterland, when you consider a further two hundred people work locally on boats, landing their produce to Sofrimar, it is apparent Sofrimar is an integral player in the local economy of Kilmore Quay. Kilmore Quay, by location, is a remote coastal area highly dependent on both the seafood and tourism sectors.

At Sofrimar, the dedication and commitment of both Management and Staff is greatly acknowledged, as key stakeholders in the Industry, the welfare and safety of staff is paramount.

To acknowledge exemplary performance an ‘Employee of the Month Award’ is presented. Routinely, staff are encouraged to share ideas and opinions on how the workplace can evolve and improve.

OVER 30 YEARS OF PURE, NATURAL SEAFOOD

Sofrimar was established in 1979 to harness the abundant supply of shellfish and whitefish landed at Kilmore Quay with a view to supplying key European markets, particularly France. The name itself is an acronym, standing for Societe France Irlande de Maree.

Sofrimar has continued to invest in its state of the art process facilities, in particular, its innovative lobster holding facility. This has allowed the company to expand rapidly and it now supplies all the key European markets and is a major exporter to Asia. The success of this has been acknowledged and has led to Sofrimar being awarded “Seafood Exporter of the Year” by the Irish Exporters Association in 2007 and 2011- an award dedicated to “a wonderful example of an exceptional seafood company”.

In 2012 Sofrimar received the Wexford People of the Year Business Award and in 2013, both Leslie Bates and Lorcan Barden, the shareholders in the company were finalists in the International Category of Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
