Tributes Poor In For Ian Paisley Following His Death

TRIBUTES POOR IN FOR IAN PAISLEY FOLLOWING HIS DEATH

“A good man who represented his people well” is how former Wexford junior minister Hugh Byrne has described Ian Paisley.

The former First Minister of Northern Ireland and ex-leader of the Democratic Unionist Party has died at the age of 88.

He opposed a number of political agreements relating to Northern Ireland including the Good Friday Agreement and refused to enter power-sharing but later reversed his position.

Hugh Byrne met Ian Paisley a number of years ago and says he was a great character to be with – even if you did feel the need to look over your shoulder.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has described him as a ‘dominating and towering figure’ in Northern and Irish politics for many years.

His family say there will be a private funeral, before a public memorial service later in the year.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams says he’s saddened by Ian Paisley’s death.
