Varadkar Says Commissioner Not Above Criticism On Whistleblowers

VARADKAR SAYS COMMISSIONER NOT ABOVE CRITICISM ON WHISTLEBLOWERS

The Transport Minister says he does not share or agree with the criticisms of the garda whistleblowers.

Leo Varadkar is describing the actions of Sergeant Maurice McCabe and former Garda John Wilson as distinguished.

He is also calling on the Garda Commissioner to withdraw his “disgusting” remark made in relation to the whistleblowers.

Minister Varadkar says he has full confidence in Martin Callinan, but says he is not above criticism.

The Minister – who was speaking at a road safety conference in Dublin – is thanking Maurice McCabe and John Wilson:

“They’ve come in for some criticism from some quarters in recent days and recent months for releasing garda information about private individuals” he said.

“While I do understand this criticism, I don’t share it or agree with it”.

“The garda whistleblowers old released the information that they did after they tired – and failed – to have their concerns addressed through official channels and proper means” he added.
