WANTED PEOPLE SMUGGLER MAY HAVE EXPLOITED THOUSANDS CROSSING MEDITERRANEAN

Officials think the world’s most-wanted people smuggler may have exploited thousands of people caught up in the Mediterranean migrant crisis this year.

Ethiopian national Ermias Ghermay is believed to be in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

People risk death during the journey from Libya across the Mediterranean.

Reporter Enda Brady is in Catania on the east coast of Sicily where many end up.

He has been speaking to the Italian coastguard.

“They tell me that in the past 48 hours, they have rescued 2,000 migrants from the Mediterranean – they will be brought ashore at some point today” he said.

“So far this year, 85,000 people have reached Italian shores this way” he added.
