Father Billy Swan, a beloved figure in Wexford, has recently received an unexpected call to serve in the Vatican. He is set to join the Vatican’s Congregation for the Clergy in Rome.
Speaking on Morning Mix about the life-changing moment, Father Billy shared that the offer came as a complete surprise. While he had no prior aspirations to work in the Vatican the call from Bishop Ger Nash made it clear that this was a unique opportunity. After several weeks of deliberation, Father Billy agreed to take on this new role, set to begin in three weeks time.
Although excited for the honor, the move brings mixed emotions. Father Billy said that he is a “home bird” at heart and leaving his family and the close-knit Wexford community will be challenging.
Wexford’s parishioners are already expressing their well-wishes with many wishing Father Billy the best as he embarks on this new journey of faith and service.
“It’s a tremendous honor, but also a painful uprooting,” Father Billy acknowledged, as he prepares to bring his unique perspective and dedication to the Vatican.
Father Swan’s time in Rome will be a five-year stint, marking a significant milestone in his dedicated service to the Church.
