WICKLOW TD ‘SHAKING WITH RELIEF’ AT NEWS ADOPTION BILL TO GO BEFORE CABINET

A Labour TD says she is ‘shaking with relief’ to hear that new adoption laws are to go before Cabinet this week.

It is reported the new bill will give many adoptees the right to their birth cert for the first time.

The legislation is aimed at striking a balance between birth parents’ right to privacy and the rights of the adopted person.

Deputy Anne Ferris was adopted herself and also had a baby adopted as a teenager.

She says she is ‘absolutely delighted’.

“I’m shaking here with relief, I suppose that this legislation is finally going to go before the Cabinet this week” she said.

“It has been a long road; it’s a year ago this week that I stood up in the Dáil and spoke about my own experience to Minister James Reilly”.

“he committed at that stage that he would do all he could, and I would like to congratulate him” she added.
