Over 1,000 Drivers Caught Speeding During National Slow Down Day

An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders, ran a nationwide speed enforcement operation, National SlowDown Day, on Tuesday, 23rd December 2025.

The 24-hour operation aimed to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions, especially with increased traffic over the Christmas holidays.

Since the operation began, Gardaí detected 1,038 drivers exceeding the speed limit, with 377 drivers intercepted on the spot.

Some of the highest speeds recorded in the South East included:

  • 168 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N30 Coolamurry, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford

  • 156 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N11 Kereight, Crossabeg, Co. Wexford

Other notable detections across the country ranged from 119 km/h to 163 km/h in zones with speed limits between 50 km/h and 120 km/h.

An Garda Síochána reminds all motorists taking to the roads over the festive period to slow down, drive attentively, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Safety on the roads is everyone’s responsibility.
