Housing shortage set to continue-report

The housing crisis is set to continue in 2026, if there isn’t a dramatic increase in the number of new homes being built.

It’s estimated just over 30 thousand new homes were built in 2025, with the official figure to be released by Government in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, a new report by daft.ie shows there were approximately half the number of properties available for sale in December 2025, compared to the average for 2015 to 2019.

This is the driver behind house prices where the average cost of a three bed semi detached in County Wexford is now almost 300 thousand euro

The average price of a four bed detached house now in the county now exceeds 450 thousand euro

Economist and author of the report, Ronan Lyons says there aren’t enough second-hand homes available or new homes being built
