Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, James Lawless TD, has announced a significant development in the creation of a new tertiary education campus in Wexford. The campus, which will be a collaboration between South East Technological University (SETU) and Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (ETB), is set to be located at Ballynagee, Wexford Town. This initiative is being supported through the Department’s Technological Sector Strategic Projects Fund, marking a major milestone in the region’s educational infrastructure.
The tertiary campus is just one part of a broader masterplan for the site, which will also feature sports facilities and an inner relief road, enhancing both educational and community infrastructure in Wexford. The development will serve as a hub for innovation, supporting learners of all ages in their pursuit of skills, upskilling and career development without the need to leave the region.
Minister Lawless acknowledged the hard work of Wexford County Council, whose sustained efforts over the years have played a key role in securing the site for this ambitious project. “This development will foster a collaborative learning environment and create pathways for learners to reach their full potential,” said Minister Lawless. “It is a testament to the commitment to support regional and national development, driving innovation and equipping learners with the skills needed to succeed globally.”
SETU President, Professor Veronica Campbell, and Dr Karina Daly, Chief Executive of Waterford and Wexford ETB, both expressed strong support for the project. Dr Daly highlighted the importance of collaboration in meeting the changing needs of learners and employers, while Professor Campbell emphasized SETU’s role in promoting regional growth and developing skills for the future.
Wexford County Council’s Chief Executive, Eddie Taaffe, also welcomed the announcement, noting that this project will be a catalyst for economic growth in the region, attracting investment and fostering the development of a talented, skilled workforce in County Wexford. This development is set to be a cornerstone in the region’s ongoing evolution as a centre for education, innovation, and economic opportunity.
