Cllr. Vicky Barron Elected New Mayor of Wexford

Labour councillor Vicky Barron has been elected as the new Mayor of Wexford following the annual meeting of Wexford Borough District held in Carricklawn on Tuesday.

Councillor Barron was elected unopposed after fellow councillor Robbie Staples declined to allow his name to go forward for the mayoralty. Councillor Staples was subsequently elected Deputy Mayor and said he looks forward to working closely with the new Mayor over the coming year.

Originally from Taghmon and now residing in Wexford town, Councillor Barron is a teacher and Labour Party representative who was first elected to Wexford County Council in 2024.

In her acceptance speech, she described becoming Mayor as one of the greatest honours of her life. She pledged to be a Mayor who listens, engages with local communities and promotes Wexford’s rich culture, heritage and traditions.

Councillor Barron succeeds outgoing Mayor Garry Laffan, who reflected on what he described as a memorable year in office. He highlighted a number of achievements during his term, including Wexford's successful hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which brought thousands of visitors to the town and showcased the county on a national stage.

The new Mayor said she is looking forward to representing the people of Wexford and working with councillors, community groups and local organisations to support the continued development of the town over the next twelve months.

Councillor Barron's election marks the beginning of a new chapter for Wexford Borough District as local representatives prepare to tackle key issues facing the town and its communities in the year ahead.
