Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Prompts Urgent Response - Trócaire Warns

A new Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has triggered an urgent humanitarian response with a highly dangerous strain spreading in a conflict-affected region.

Irish aid agency Trócaire says its teams are on the ground in the province of Ituri, working with local partners to help contain the outbreak and support vulnerable communities.

The strain has no approved vaccine and carries a high fatality rate placing significant pressure on already fragile health services in the area.

Trócaire says ongoing conflict and large-scale displacement are making the response more difficult, with many people living in camps and informal settlements where containment measures such as isolation and quarantine are harder to enforce.

With no vaccine available, efforts are centred on prevention, early detection, and isolation of cases, along with basic supportive treatment such as fluid management and infection control.

Health workers are also operating strict safety protocols to protect frontline staff and limit further spread.

Trócaire has appealed for urgent public donations to support its work, saying continued funding is essential to sustain its emergency response and help stop the spread of the disease.
