The government has announced significant cuts to excise duties on fuel. Starting at midnight, 15 cents will be shaved off a liter of petrol, and 20 cents off diesel. An additional 2-cent levy reduction will apply to both, making the total cut 22 cents for diesel and 17 cents for petrol. This will take effect tomorrow at service stations.
Also included in the package is a rebate scheme for coach operators and a fuel allowance extension. The fuel allowance will be extended into April, and the weekly payment will be doubled from €38 to €76 to support low-income households.
While these cuts are welcome, some are calling for more, especially concerning home heating oil, which remains relatively unaffected despite some small reductions. The debate around carbon tax and excise duties on home heating oil is likely to continue, with some political parties urging further cuts.
In addition to fuel-related measures, there will be targeted energy supports for vulnerable groups such as pensioners, carers, and those with disabilities. The fuel allowance will continue to support about 470,000 households, with an extended payment period and an increase in the weekly amount. The exact date of implementation is still being clarified, but it’s expected by mid-April.
