Ballycogley's Fiona Brauneisen Looking To Medal At Tag Rugby World Cup

A Wexford woman says they are looking to medal when Ireland takes on the 2026 International Tag Federation (ITF) Tag World Cup in Australia this autumn.

Fiona Brauneisen from Ballycogley has been selected for the team which will travel to Coffs Harbour from the 15th to the 18th of October.

She can't wait to represent her country on the international stage.

"I mean it's always an honour to put on the Green Jersey, it's something you work really hard for all year round and to get that call to say you've made the squad, every single time is just unbelievable."

Fiona only took up the sport in 2021 and says the social aspect of the sport is what made her buy in fully.

The St Fintan's GAA clubwoman says Ireland will have no fear taking on the best teams in the world in a few months time.

"Listen, tag rugby was born in Australia so it's kind of like coming to Ireland to play against a team of David Clifford.

"They grew up playing the sport and they've a lot more depth as well and the heat will be a huge element as well, playing in temperatures of 30 degrees plus so we have to prepare ourselves physically and mentally.

"We'll be doing a lot of fitness, strength and conditioning and getting those reps on the pitch so we can be the best team we can be and we're going to medal."
