Derek McGrath Will Bring "Passion" To Senior Hurling Management - Wexford GAA

The chairman of Wexford GAA says Derek McGrath's passion was one of the reasons he was chosen as the next senior hurling manager.

The Waterford man will begin a three year term shortly and takes up the reigns following the departure of Keith Rossiter.

McGrath previously served as the Waterford boss and lead the Deise to the All Ireland final in 2017.

Wexford GAA Chairman John Kenny says McGrath made it clear he wants to get Wexford back to where they belong:

"He didn't make any promises which I would think would be a mad thing to do but what he did bring to the table was an absolute willingness to do his utmost to bring Wexford back up to where we want them to be.

"You could see the passion coming through and his organisation skills as well."

McGrath's style of play will be fully backed by the officials.

The 50 year old returns to intercounty management after winning the Limerick hurling title with Doon in 2024.

The Waterford man also won a national league with his native county during a 5 year stint with the Deise.

His tactics are seen as defensive but Mr Kenny says he will show a willingness to adapt:

"If you look at Doon, they played with a different style than that. 

"Teams evolve and you have to be able to change in the modern and within the game itself.

"Derek has a great acumen for situations in games so I think we have to give him our full trust."

Mr Kenny is also asking fans to come along on the journey for the next three years.

He has a knowledge of the local hurling scene having previously worked as a coach with Faythe Harriers.

Mr Kenny says this is an exciting step forward for the sport here:

"We've a whole new management set up coming in and I think it'll give an impetus to the team.

"The last thing Derek said to me was that he was looking forward to the journey and I'm asking Wexford supporters to come with us on that journey".
