uefa plans to introduce radical new international competition
The 54 member associations of European football's governing body will vote tomorrow on the creation of a League of Nations-style competition that would offer qualifying places at the World Cup and European Championships. If the tournament is approved, it would be staged in odd-numbered years on dates normally reserved for friendlies, starting after the 2018 World Cup. According to reports, the competition would consist of four divisions that would be sub-divided into groups, with promotion and relegation, plus a 'final four' series to be staged at neutral venues in the summer.
