Wexford GAA Teams Reflect on a Week of Successes and Challenges

Last week was a rollercoaster for Wexford GAA teams, with highs and lows that had supporters on the edge of their seats.

A Strong Start: U20 Hurlers and Footballers Shine

The week began with a bang on Wednesday, as our U20 hurlers delivered a dominant performance against Kildare in Chadwicks Wexford Park, securing a commanding 5-28 to 2-14 win. This victory earned them a spot in the Leinster quarter-finals, where they will look to continue their impressive form.

The following evening, the U20 footballers added to the excitement by lifting the Andrew Corden Cup after defeating Laois 2-13 to 1-12. This victory propelled them into the All-Ireland semi-final of the Tier 2 competition, where they will face either Down or Fermanagh, both of whom will battle it out in the Ulster Final on Tuesday evening.

A Dominant Display: Minor Hurlers Impress

On Saturday morning, our minor hurlers put on an incredible display in Laois Hire O'Moore Park, dominating their opponents from start to finish. They defeated Laois 6-23 to 1-10, securing a comprehensive win and further cementing their reputation as one of the county's most talented youth teams.

A Tough Setback: Senior Hurlers Fall to Kilkenny

However, the optimism of the week was dashed on Saturday evening in UPMC Nowlan Park, as the senior hurlers suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Kilkenny, losing 5-21 to 1-16. Despite the setback, the team now has a weekend off to regroup before their crucial clash with Dublin in Chadwicks Wexford Park on Saturday, May 9. Wexford supporters will undoubtedly rally behind the team for this important match.

Looking Ahead: Key Matches for Wexford Teams

The coming week promises more action, with just two key matches on the horizon:

  • Minor Hurlers vs Kilkenny: The minor hurlers face Kilkenny in Chadwicks Wexford Park on Saturday, May 2 at 2 p.m. After Westmeath’s unexpected win over Dublin, Wexford needs to secure a victory to progress to the semi-finals. This talented group is hoping for strong local support to push them over the line.
  • U20 Hurlers vs Laois: On Bank Holiday Monday, the U20 hurlers travel to Laois for their Leinster quarter-final. With Wexford as the favourites, the team will be determined to continue their winning ways and set up a semi-final date with either Galway or Dublin. Supporters are urged to be there, backing the team in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

Ticket Information

Tickets for both matches must be purchased online in advance through the Leinster GAA ticketing portal. They will not be available in shops, and there will be free admission for U16s when accompanied by an adult.

Tailteann Cup Draw

Finally, don’t miss the draw for the first round of the Tailteann Cup, which will take place at 1 p.m. today (Monday). The draw will be shown live on GAA+, the GAA+ YouTube channel, and the official GAA social media channels.
