Wexford jockey JJ Slevin had an impressive outing at Navan on Sunday, claiming a notable victory aboard James Du Berlais in the Grade 2 Boyle Sports Webster Cup Chase. The 10-year-old horse, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, triumphed under Slevin’s patient guidance, winning by two lengths despite being the 11-1 outsider in a small, competitive field of four.
Slevin, known for his tactical riding style, held the horse back in the rear before making a decisive move as the race unfolded. "He’s a very good jumper but you are always a hostage to fortune on this horse as you can’t get there too soon on him," Slevin said. "You always feel you are going well on him, but you need to be as patient as possible. He loves that heavy ground, too."
The victory added another highlight to Slevin’s successful day at Navan, where he also claimed a win with Galileo Dame, who triumphed in her maiden hurdle race by a commanding 10 lengths.
Wexford's Colm Murphy Celebrates Savante’s Victory at Navan
In another triumph for the region, Wexford-based trainer Colm Murphy saw his mare Savante claim a well-deserved victory at Navan, returning to winning ways after a narrow defeat at the Dublin Racing Festival. The 4-5 favourite secured a nine-length victory, comfortably beating her rivals in the 2-mile chase.
Murphy’s mare, who had previously been edged out by a head in a Listed hurdle at Leopardstown, was dropped in grade for this race, and her return to form was impressive. "It was a good performance," Murphy said after the race. "She showed what she’s capable of when everything clicks."
