Wexford County Council's CEO says his officials have a good record of rehousing stray dogs.
At this week's council meeting, Councillor Donal Kenny raised the issue of dog wardens after being told by a local vet about an uptick in the number of dogs being put down.
Stats from the council show 307 dogs have been collected by dog wardens in the year to August with 10 of those being put to sleep.
10 animals were euthanised for the entire of 2025 but this was way down on 2024's figure of 31.
CEO Eddie Taaffe said the two full time dog wardens worked very hard in the county and 1,006 dogs have been rehomed or transfered over the last 3 years.
377 dogs were reclaimed by their original owners after going into the care of the dog wardens with 81 of those in the first 8 months of this year.
9 fines related to the Control of Dogs Act were handed out in Wexford between January and August with 12 last year and 11 in 2024.
Owners whose dogs are found to be worrying livestock could receive an on-the-spot fine of €300 after the penalty was increased from €100 in late 2023.
