139 GPs working in Wexford as doctor numbers reach record high

There are 139 GPs working in County Wexford, according to new figures from the Medical Council.

The figures are contained in its Medical Workforce Intelligence Report 2025, which shows a record 22,257 doctors were clinically active in Ireland last year.

Nationally, the number of GPs has risen by 5.3 per cent to 5,017.However, the report also highlights growing pressures on doctors, particularly GPs.

Almost 28 per cent of doctors said they experienced difficulties providing patients with sufficient levels of care at least once a week. For GPs, that figure rises to almost 35%.

Workload, administration and bureaucracy, and difficulties accessing specialist opinions were among the main barriers identified. The report also shows Ireland is becoming increasingly reliant on internationally trained doctors, with almost 30 per cent qualifying outside Ireland, the EU or the UK.

The Medical Council says the figures highlight both the growth of Ireland's medical workforce and the need for long-term planning to ensure it remains sustainable.
