As National Grief Awareness Week continues until February 1, Anam Cara, an all-Ireland charity supporting bereaved parents, is urging people in Wexford to reach out for help, reminding them that no one needs to grieve alone. The charity offers information, resources, practical advice and peer support sessions for parents who have experienced the loss of a child.
Michelle Reynolds, CEO of Anam Cara, explained that the charity’s mission is to create a society where every parent who loses a child receives understanding, support and compassion. The death of a child is a life-altering event and grief can feel isolating especially when those around the parent may not fully understand the depth of the loss.
“Grief is lifelong and deeply individual,” said Reynolds. “It can be very isolating, especially when people avoid talking about it. Silence often makes bereaved parents feel even more alone.”
Anam Cara provides services to ensure no parent has to navigate the grieving process alone, including peer support and practical advice. The charity’s vision is to help parents feel supported and understood and to open up conversations about the complexities of grief.
Reynolds also highlighted how storytelling, such as the film Hamnet, has opened a vital space for conversations around grief, showing how parents and families grieve differently.
Anam Cara’s services are free of charge, relying on community support and donations.
