A Wexford housing estate has celebrated community spirit with the success of its inaugural Street Fest, bringing neighbours of all ages together for an afternoon of food, games and conversation.
The event took place on the green area in Bishopswater and was organised by the local residents' association, with Kathleen Kearney and Johnny McManus leading the initiative.
According to organisers, the aim was simple – to encourage neighbours to meet, socialise and strengthen community ties.
"The whole idea of a street fest was to bring everyone in the community together," said Kathleen Kearney. "People are busy and often only see their neighbours coming and going. This gave everyone a chance to stop, chat and get to know each other."
The event attracted families from across the estate, with between 40 and 50 children attending alongside parents and grandparents. Residents brought food to share, while tables, chairs, games and bouncy castles helped create a festive atmosphere.
"There was a fantastic turnout and everybody contributed," Kathleen said. "We ended up with more food than we needed, but that's always a good sign."
One of the key messages from the organisers is that community events do not need large budgets to be successful.
"This didn't cost anybody anything," Kathleen explained. "People brought out things they already had at home – footballs, dart boards, chalk and simple games. It doesn't have to be expensive or complicated."
Residents were encouraged to mingle rather than remain outside their own homes, helping to create new friendships and strengthen existing connections within the estate.
Following the success of the first event, organisers have already confirmed that the Bishopswater Street Fest will return next year.
For Kathleen, who was born and raised in the estate, the day was particularly special.
"We're lucky to have such a strong community spirit in Bishopswater and events like this help keep that alive," she said.
The success of the Street Fest has shown that a simple community gathering can play a big role in bringing neighbours together and strengthening local connections.
