Bunclody College Launches New "Phone-Away" Policy

Bunclody Community College is rolling out a brand-new smartphone initiative this week aimed at reducing classroom distractions and boosting student well-being.

Under the new "Phone-Away" policy, students will store their mobile phones inside secure, designated boxes during school hours. Unlike total phone bans that leave parents concerned about contact, this system ensures devices remain safely accessible on site if an urgent situation arises—giving both students and parents peace of mind.

Speaking about the initiative, Paul Cahill from Bunclody Community College highlighted the growing concerns around smartphone addiction, aggressive app design, and the impact of constant notifications on young people's mental health and learning. By removing the immediate urge to check screens during the school day, the college hopes to create a healthier, more focused environment for its students.

School leadership is keen to build strong community awareness around the new measure, encouraging open conversations between parents, students, and educators on managing technology use effectively.
