Calls For Traffic Lights On Busy Rosslare Road Outside Lidl

Calls are being made for improved safety measures at a busy pedestrian crossing on the Rosslare Road amid concerns that motorists are failing to stop for people trying to cross the road.

The crossing is close to a large residential area & the Lidl Supermarket on a heavily travelled route carrying traffic through to Rosslare and towards Rosslare Harbour and a number of surrounding villages.

Concerns have been raised that the current crossing is not sufficient for the volume and speed of traffic using the road.

Speaking to South East Radio at the location, a local road-safety campaigner Eddie Colfer said several vehicles continued through the crossing while he was observing it, despite pedestrians having priority.

He said an articulated lorry was among the few vehicles to stop immediately, while a number of cars continued past.

There are also concerns about residents from nearby housing developments having to cross the road to access shops and other services.

The campaigner said older people, children and people with mobility difficulties could be particularly vulnerable.

He believes a full set of traffic lights should be installed at the crossing, similar to those already in place at other locations.

The road carries significant volumes of local and port-related traffic, with vehicles travelling towards Rosslare Harbour as well as Rosslare Strand and communities across south-east Wexford.

He warned that action should be taken before a serious collision occurs, rather than after somebody is badly injured or killed.
