Independent Councillor and ambulance officer Ger Carty has made a dramatic call this morning. Citing the critical issues surrounding road safety in County Wexford and around the country the ambulance officer said the pressures on emergency services during Christmas and the ongoing rise in road fatalities have continued to rise despite various road safety initiatives. He is calling for stronger leadership from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and suggested that the current CEO's (Sam Waide) position might be untenable. Cllr Carty said that while road safety campaigns exist, they seem insufficient to reverse the trends in fatalities, with certain counties like Wexford facing a particularly high number of incidents. He emphasized the need for stricter regulations, such as emergency legislation to confiscate scooters from riders without proper helmets or safety equipment and better enforcement of existing traffic laws. According to Carty, the RSA’s approach hasn’t been radical enough and he called for a new strategy to curb the rising number of road deaths.
