Electric car registrations have risen sharply in Wexford this year, as the Society of the Irish Motor Industry calls on the Government to extend Battery Electric Vehicle supports in Budget 2027
New figures from SIMI show 1,004 new electric cars were registered in County Wexford between January and September, up from 551 during the same period last year
That represents an increase of just over 82%.
Overall new car registrations in Wexford also increased, with 3,232 cars registered so far this year, compared with 2,912 in 2025 — a rise of almost 11%.
Nationally, 35,195 new battery electric cars have been registered so far this year, up more than 57% on the same period in 2025.
Battery electric cars are now the most popular engine type in the new car market, accounting for just over 27% of registrations.
SIMI Director General Brian Cooke says the Government now has an opportunity in Budget 2027 to maintain that momentum.
He said rising fossil fuel costs and Ireland’s climate targets make continued EV supports particularly important.
SIMI is calling on the Government to extend existing Battery Electric Vehicle supports into next year.
Across the wider market, new car registrations nationally were up 13% in September, while used car imports rose by almost 19%.
