Extension of Free Travel Scheme in Wexford to Benefit Over 19,000 People Aged 70 and Over

A significant expansion of the Free Travel Scheme announced by Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary TD and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD will benefit nearly 20,000 people aged 70 and over in County Wexford. From now, those with a valid Free Travel Companion Public Services Card can bring a companion, aged 16 or older, to travel with them for free on all public transport services under the scheme. This includes bus, rail, Local Link, Luas and certain private bus and ferry services. The new measure is part of a national effort to support older people’s mobility, with over 525,000 recipients expected to benefit across Ireland. For Wexford, an estimated 19,124 older residents will gain the freedom to travel with a companion at no extra cost, giving them greater independence and security. Minister James Browne has praised this development, highlighting the positive impact it will have on older people in the county. “This extension of the Free Travel Scheme will make a real difference for over 19,000 people in Wexford, ensuring they can travel with a companion, whether for social visits, medical appointments, or other essential journeys,” said Minister Browne. “It empowers older people and strengthens our commitment to providing accessible public transport for all." The Free Travel Scheme is available to everyone aged 66 and over and to some under 66s who meet specific conditions. This expansion adds to the existing benefits, allowing individuals with a valid Free Travel Companion Card to travel with a companion at no extra cost.
