Extra 250 gardai to be recruited
The Justice Minister has confirmed that 250 gardai are to be recruited this year. It will bring to 550 the number of new recruits to the force since September. The new recruits will train at the Garda college in Templemore, Co. Tipperary this year. Yesterday the Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan admitted that more than 300 new gardai will be needed every year just to maintain the force at current levels. The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors also revealed that around 30 members are retiring every month.
