Families across Ireland to mark Wave of Light tonight

Families across Ireland will come together tonight to remember babies who have died during pregnancy or shortly after birth, as part of the annual Global Wave of Light.

The event takes place, today, October 15th at 7pm, during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. People are encouraged to light a candle in memory of babies whose lives were lost and to show support for bereaved parents and families.

Féileacáin, the Irish organisation providing support to families affected by pregnancy and infant loss, is once again encouraging people across the country to take part.

The organisation says the simple act of lighting a candle is a powerful way of remembering babies and letting bereaved parents know that they are not alone. In previous years, buildings and landmarks around Ireland have also been illuminated in pink and blue as part of the Wave of Light.

People taking part at home can light a candle at 7pm and, if sharing photographs online, use the hashtag #FeileacainWaveOfLight.

Féileacáin was established by bereaved parents and provides support to anyone affected by the death of a baby during or after pregnancy. Its services include support meetings, a helpline and local befriending support.

The organisation's support line is 085 249 6464, with support also available by email.

Speaking ahead of the Wave of Light, Nina Doyle, Regional Coordinator with Féileacáin, joined Alan Corcoran on the Morning Mix to talk about the significance of the annual remembrance and the support available to bereaved families.

The Wave of Light is an opportunity to remember and honour babies who are no longer here, while helping to ensure families affected by pregnancy and infant loss know that their babies are not forgotten.
