Fethard RNLI Mark 30 Years With Community Open Day

Fethard RNLI has marked 30 years since the reopening of its lifeboat station with a community open day.

Volunteers past and present gathered at the station on Saturday, September 19th, to celebrate three decades of lifesaving service and to thank the local community for its continued support.

Visitors were given tours of the station and lifeboat, met crew members and learned more about the work of the RNLI.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of 30 Year Long Service Awards to five volunteers who have been involved with Fethard RNLI since the station reopened in 1996.

Walter Foley, Peter Barry, Dr John Cox, John Colfer and Jamie Chapman were all recognised for three decades of service.

Earlier this year, Walter Foley and Dr John Cox were also formally presented with medals at an RNLI Volunteer Recognition Event in Clontarf Castle.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration, Fethard RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Domini Codd thanked the community for its support over the past 30 years.

She said the work of the RNLI depends on the generosity of the public, from those who volunteer their time to those who fundraise, donate or support the charity in other ways.

She also reminded people to call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard if they see someone in difficulty on the coast or get into trouble in, on or near the water.

Fethard RNLI says the anniversary was not only a chance to reflect on the past three decades, but also to look ahead to the next generation of volunteers who will continue the station’s lifesaving work.
