First Phase of New Multi-Storey Car Park at Wexford General Hospital Now Open

The new multi-storey car park at Wexford General Hospital (WGH) has opened its first section to the public as part of a phased rollout, starting Wednesday, April 8, 2026. This marks a significant step forward in the hospital’s ongoing infrastructure development.

Construction of the car park, carried out by Tom O’Brien Construction Ltd., began in January of last year. Once completed, the facility will provide 356 parking spaces spread over four stories and seven levels, covering a total area of 11,624 square metres.

The multi-storey car park is a key part of a broader civil engineering project at WGH, which includes the realignment of the main entrance road and preparatory works for the new Somerton Wing, a 97-bed ward development. The car park will replace the existing main car park on the Newtown Road side of the hospital.

Parking rates will remain consistent with the current charges at WGH, with long-term and concession parking options available. Accessible parking spaces and temporary set-down zones for patients and visitors with disabilities are also part of the new arrangements.

In addition to the car park, plans are moving forward for the construction of the Somerton Wing, which will be built on the site of the existing main car park. A tender process for the project is nearing completion, with construction slated to begin in Autumn 2026. The six-storey Somerton Wing will feature 97 single-occupancy en-suite rooms designed to improve patient comfort, care, dignity, and infection control.

The new Somerton Wing will also include two landscaped courtyards and provide essential facilities for staff and visitors, such as staff bases, utility rooms, meeting spaces, and visitor rooms. The lower ground floor will house new staff changing rooms, as well as Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy facilities.
