Former aib chairman 'regrets' his part in decisions taken by the bank

The former chairman of AIB says the bank lent too much money to individual developers and says he's sorry for his role in the collapse. Dermot Gleeson has given evidence to the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry. Mr Gleeson was one of only four bankers present at Government Buildings on the night the bank guarantee was agreed. He says he is sorry for the part he played in leading the bank to be nationalised. "The great recession of 2008, the worst the world had seen for 80 years, did not start in Ireland or in the Irish banks - but there's no doubt there were decisions made in AIB which made things worse than they need have been for citizens, for employees and for shareholders". "I wish to express my sincere regret for my part in those events" he added.
