Former Wexford MEP Reflects on Iran’s Struggles and International Interference

Mick Wallace a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) has shared his views on Iran's ongoing unrest, drawing from his own visits to the country in 2023. Speaking on Morning Mix Wallace has expressed sympathy for the Iranian people, who have endured 60 years of sanctions, which he argues have had a severe impact on the economy and living conditions. He acknowledged that the Iranian government has failed to address significant inequalities but firmly opposed the violent crackdown on protesters. Wallace criticized European sanctions saying they harm ordinary Iranians rather than the government and only deepen the country's economic woes. During his visits the former MEP said he witnessed firsthand the economic pressure caused by the sanctions and highlighted the role of merchants in sparking the protests. While critical of the Iranian regime's approach to governance and human rights, Wallace emphasized the need for the West to stop interfering in Iran's internal affairs, including through support for Israeli policies. He warned that foreign intervention could lead to chaos with the collapse of Iran’s government potentially resulting in civil war. Germany's chancellor has now said he believes the Iranian government is in its 'final days and weeks'. Friedrich Merz also renewed called for authorities there to end the violence against demonstrators - after hundreds were killed in anti-government protests. Meanwhile, Donald Trump's announced fresh 25 per cent tariffs on Iran's trading partners - as he weighs up the potential for a military response. That could impact Ireland which exports butter, infant formula and pharmaceuticals to Iran.
