Germans go to the polls

Angela Merkel is expected to win a fourth term as German chancellor when the country goes to the polls today.

Opinion polls project Mrs Merkel's CDU party along with the CSU to win just over a third of votes. One of the significant stories from the general election is expected to be the surge in popularity for far-right party the AFD, who are on course to win as many as 80 seats.
