The Good Grief initiative, a collaborative effort between Wexford County Council’s Creative Ireland Programme and Waterford City and County Council has been nominated for the prestigious Health and Wellbeing category at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2025. These awards, in partnership with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage are designed to highlight and celebrate the most innovative and impactful practices within local government across Ireland. Launched in autumn 2024, the Good Grief project aimed to support individuals in the second year following a bereavement by offering a series of creative workshops. These workshops were designed to promote a healthy exploration of grief while equipping participants with new skills to cope with their ongoing grief journey. The project was a partnership with the HSE, Wexford Mental Health Association and Realta with a full evaluation of the initiative set to be released in November 2025. Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Joe Sullivan, expressed his pride in the recognition, saying, “It is fantastic to see the value the Creative Ireland Programme brings to our communities recognized nationally. The Good Grief project underscores the power of collaboration between local authorities, health and wellbeing organisations, and communities. It highlights creativity as a bridge between them and its potential in helping people navigate difficult life experiences." As the Good Grief project continues to evolve, the next stage will feature workshops tied to the Grief's Current State exhibition by artist Ciara O’Connor, running from October 24th to 26th at Garter Lane in Waterford. Additionally, two-hour workshops led by land artist Mayumi Nakabayashi will be held at the Storyteller’s House in Oulart, Wexford, on November 12th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd.
