Gorey Rotary Club is applying to Rotary International for its own independent charter after reaching the required membership threshold within its first year.
Established in 2025, the club initially operated as a satellite of Wexford Rotary Club. However, its rapid growth means it is now seeking a separate identity, allowing it to operate as a fully independent club and member of Rotary International.
Club President Gráinne Kenneally Quirke spoke on Morning Mix with Alan Corcoran about the move and said members had expected to remain under the guidance of Wexford Rotary for several more years, making the achievement particularly significant.
“We expected to be under the wing of Wexford Rotary for another few years, so it is fantastic to reach the charter threshold within a year,” she said.
“But it’s not surprising I suppose, because Gorey has such a vibrant and supportive business community, and that is exactly what Rotary is all about.”
The club brings together members from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds, including established business owners and people who have set up more recently, alongside those born in Gorey and others who have moved to the area.
Unlike some longer-established Rotary clubs, which often have a large cohort of retired members, Gorey Rotary Club is made up of active business owners and professionals who are keen to build connections while contributing to their local community.
Community involvement is central to the club's work. Earlier this year, it introduced the Gorey Young Citizen of the Year Award, recognising the contribution of young people to their community.
Nominations are now open for the 2027 awards, which will take place next February.
The move towards independent charter status marks a significant milestone for the club as it continues to develop its role in the Gorey community, bringing together local businesses and professionals with a shared commitment to giving back.
