Heatwave Set to Grip Wexford as Temperatures Could Top 30°C

People across County Wexford are being urged to prepare for a prolonged spell of very warm and potentially hot weather, with heatwave conditions forecast to develop from Wednesday and continue into next week.

According to the latest weather advisory, daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 25°C across much of the country, with parts of the south-east, including Wexford, potentially seeing temperatures climb into the high 20s and even above 30°C from Friday onwards.

The advisory remains in effect from Wednesday 8 July until Tuesday 14 July.

Forecasters say the hot spell will be accompanied by high to very high UV levels, while nights are expected to remain unusually warm and humid.

Overnight temperatures are forecast to stay above 15°C, with the possibility of tropical nights in some areas over the weekend, where temperatures fail to fall below 20°C.

There is also the risk of thundery downpours later in the week, which could bring localised heavy rain and lightning.

Safety Advice

With many people expected to head to Wexford's beaches, lakes and rivers, authorities are reminding the public to take extra care around water.

The hot weather may also bring a number of other impacts, including:

• Increased risk of dehydration and heat stress, particularly for older people, young children and those with underlying health conditions.

• Uncomfortable sleeping conditions due to warm overnight temperatures.

• Increased pressure on transport services during the hot spell.

• Animal welfare concerns, with livestock and pets needing access to shade and fresh drinking water.

• Growing concerns over dry conditions, including the potential for drought and an elevated risk of wildfires and forest fires.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, wear sunscreen and check in on elderly neighbours or vulnerable family members.

Motorists and anyone enjoying the outdoors are also urged to avoid lighting barbecues or open fires in areas where vegetation has become dry.
