HSE Raises Awareness of Elder Abuse at Enniscorthy Pharmacy Event

The HSE Adult Safeguarding Team partnered with local pharmacies across the South East to raise awareness of elder abuse and the supports available to older people, marking this year's World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

As part of the initiative, information and drop-in stands were hosted in pharmacies throughout Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and South Tipperary. In Enniscorthy, members of the safeguarding team met customers at Grants Pharmacy on Rafter Street to provide information and advice on recognising and reporting abuse, neglect or mistreatment of older people.

The campaign highlighted the message that every older person has the right to live a life free from abuse and to be treated with dignity and respect.

Rob O'Connor, Principal Social Worker with the HSE Adult Safeguarding Team for Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford, said the partnership with local pharmacies helped bring important information directly into communities.

"We were delighted to partner with local pharmacies to promote World Elder Abuse Awareness Day this year. It enabled our team to reach out to people in the community and come to them with information and support advice," he said.

Mr O'Connor encouraged anyone concerned about the welfare of an older person to seek advice and support.

"I'd encourage anyone that has a worry about an older person or would like to find out more, to contact us in the HSE South East Safeguarding Team on Freephone 0818 101 101."

The HSE says support is available for older people experiencing abuse, mistreatment or neglect, as well as for family members, carers and members of the public who may have concerns about someone's wellbeing.
