HSE Urges Wexford Residents to Get Flu Vaccine as Cases Surge

The HSE is urging everyone eligible in Wexford to get their flu vaccine as influenza cases and hospitalisations continue to rise across the country. Data from the HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) reveals that flu activity is on the rise, with more cases being reported each week. Health officials expect this trend to continue over the coming weeks, making it essential for those at higher risk to get vaccinated. As part of its Winter Vaccination Programme, the HSE is offering free flu vaccines at participating GP clinics, pharmacies and community health centres across Wexford. The vaccine is strongly recommended for all individuals in high-risk groups, including those aged 60 and over, people with certain health conditions, healthcare workers and children aged 2-17 years. Pregnant women, carers and individuals in close contact with at-risk groups, such as those living in nursing homes or working with animals, are also eligible for the vaccine. Dr Carmel Mullaney, Regional Director of Public Health for HSE Dublin and South East, explained: “Every winter we see an increase in seasonal illnesses such as flu. Already, we are seeing higher numbers of flu cases compared to last year. While flu can be mild for many, it can be very serious for older adults, young children, and those with long-term health conditions.” In addition to the flu shot, the children's nasal spray flu vaccine is also available for children aged 2-17 from participating GPs and pharmacies. The nasal spray is a safe, effective, and painless option for younger recipients. To protect yourself and others, the HSE encourages simple preventative measures, such as staying home if you're unwell, washing hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes and keeping indoor spaces well ventilated.
