Irish film project Maya Butterfly is heading to the Venice Gap-Financing Market later this month, with Wexford-based film professional Mike Donnelly serving as Line Producer.
The feature debut from Irish filmmaker Edwina Casey follows Maya, a young soprano whose hearing begins to deteriorate as she prepares for a career-defining performance of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.
Casey’s background as an opera stage director informs the story, which explores ambition, pressure and the physical demands placed on professional singers.
The project, produced by Dublin-based Hail Mary Pictures, has received production financing from Screen Ireland, with filming planned in Ireland and Northern Ireland next year.
Casey will pitch Maya Butterfly at the Venice Gap-Financing Market from August 29th to 31st.
