John Dwyer Slams Taxing of Carer’s Allowance As Unfair and Penny-Pinching

The Chair of the New Ross District John Dwyer  has strongly criticized the decision to tax carer’s allowance, calling it “unfair” and “penny-pinching.” The government’s move to suddenly impose tax on carer’s payments, which were previously tax-free, has left many carers facing unexpected tax bills some of which run into thousands of euros. Cllr. Dwyer was speaking earlier on Morning Mix in the wake of mounting concerns from carers across the county. He pointed out that over 99,000 carers in Ireland are providing invaluable support to the state. Without these individuals, who are caring for loved ones at home, the Irish healthcare system would face an overwhelming burden. With the average carer's payment at €270 per week it is a fraction of the cost of a long-term stay in a nursing home, which can cost €2,500 per week or more . Carers, many of whom are already struggling financially, are now being faced with large, unexpected tax bills, which they may not have the ability to pay. John Dwyer called on the Minister for Finance to step in and halt the tax collection, saying that it is unjust to tax the allowance that was originally designed to support the vital work carers do. Dwyer argued that the government should recognize the valuable service carers provide and ensure they are not further burdened by taxes on their allowance. “It’s a system that’s been set up for a reason: carers help keep people at home, and that’s a huge saving to the state,” he said. "To impose a tax on it now is a slap in the face."
